Post Operative Care After an Extraction

An extraction is a minor oral surgical procedure. After an extraction you should follow these few instructions to avoid any complications and speed-up healing time:

  • Avoid HOT drinks, alcohol, smoking, and hard chewy foods.
  • Choose cool drinks and minced soft foods.
  • Do not rinse for two hours. After that, you may use warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in half a glass of warm water) to gently rinse.
  • Apply a cold compress externally to reduce swelling.
  • Take analgesics and antibiotics as instructed.
  • Rest for a few hours, but you do not have to lie down.
  • Strenuous exercise is best avoided for the rest of the day.
  • A small amount of bleeding is normal. Should the wound begin to bleed, apply sterile gauze on the bleeding point and bite firmly on it for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Immediately call the surgery on (02) 9871 5228 if you experience severe pain or excessive bleeding.
