Denture Care and Instructions

Please carefully read the instructions below to ensure that you receive the maximum benefit from your new custom-made denture(s):

  • Wet your dentures with cold water to help them slip easily into your mouth.
  • Wear your dentures for eating and during the daytime.
  • You should massage your gums with your fingers or a soft brush for several minutes daily. This will improve the tone and health of your gums so that they will support the dentures better.
  • Cut foods into small bite-sized pieces, especially during the first few months of receiving your new dentures.
  • Food should be chewed evenly using both sides of your mouth to reduce uneven wear of your denture teeth and the supporting tissues. This will also minimize denture sore spots on your gums.
  • Leave your dentures out at night to give the gums rest, prevent sore spots, and reduce tooth decay. Grinding of your teeth is usually worse when sleeping, as night-time clenching is at its heaviest. This could result in excessive wear to the denture teeth if they worn at night.

Dentures

Denture maintenance:
  • Brush your dentures after each meal, using an ordinary soft toothbrush over a sink filled with water. This water bath will reduce the fall’s impact and prevent the denture from breaking.
  • A mild hand soap, toothpaste or denture paste can occasionally be used when cleaning the denture, but do not use harsh abrasives or gritty pastes to minimize denture wear.
  • Never use boiling water on dentures.
  • Keep dentures moist or soaked in water whenever they are out of the mouth. This will minimize shrinkage.
  • Soak your denture overnight using Steradent denture cleaning tablets, or one teaspoon of White King in a glass to occasionally give your dentures an extra clean
  • Except for metal dentures, stubborn stains or tartar can be removed by soaking acrylic dentures overnight in full strength white vinegar.
